D'Anne

I'm not sure why, but tonight I can't stop thinking about a cousin I lost nearly 10 years ago. D'Anne was my closest cousin both in age and in friendship. Dee died from brain injuries sustained in a freak car accident one crisp Monday morning in March. That day changed my life and caused our family a lot of heartache and grief. She was just 20 years old.
I am sitting at home tonight, virtually by myself (Pike is sleeping) and can't help but feel her presence in this place. There's no other way to explain why my thoughts would so suddenly to turn her.
I wish she could be here, wish I could see her face.

STAY AWAY IKE!

I really don't want to see your ugly face!

Hurricane Dolly

Finally - here is my Hurricane Dolly post. We, like many others, didn't do very much preparation for this hurricane - it was only a Cat 1, and we've seen 50 mile/hour winds many times before.

Once it hit land, it just stayed and sat on us and rained and rained and the wind blew and blew. We are certain we saw a few 100 mile per hour gusts - I've never seen wind do some of the things it did around here. I wish I would have taken more pictures of the destruction, but I was too busy with my jaw dropped open.

The night before the hurricane, we were outside visiting with neighbors and hanging out. Pike was playing in finger paints on the driveway - all was relatively calm.

Wednesday was the day the hurricane came. It was supposed to be there about noon, but it was more like 2pm. It came and whirled around us for over 10 hours. In my opinion, it was underestimated. It was still just a Cat 1/2 hurricane, but no one thought it would sit on us like it did.

I've seen flooded areas that usually never hold water, telephone poles snapped in two, trees completely blocking roads and roofs completly caved in or peeled back. It was really surreal.

We lost power at our house about 2pm and slept that night in it - when I woke up about 7am, I walked outside in my pajamas and a camera and took these next few shots. I felt like I was in a movie - walking around like a zombie in the aftermath of a storm. Neighbors were outside too - it was like we had all come out to assess the damage.

My nieghbors houses

The street across from our was completely blocked by a downed tree. People at the end of this street actually had flooding waters in their house.

This is Peso Bills restaurant - it had pretty major damage. Pictures don't really do it justice.

A store just down from my office.

Look at all those palm fronds.

This is a building downtown - the roof caveed in and it went all the way through the second story floor and to the ground level. So sad.

Somehow the entire facade of this building was in shambles. I'm not sure how this one happened.

WORST DRESS EVER

Today I went to a bridesmaids luncheon. I am a bridemaid in Steve's little sister's wedding tomorrow. The theme of the luncheon was sort-of like the movie 27 dresses - you had to wear one of your old bridesmaids dresses and there was a contest and awards for vaious categories.

Well, I don't keep anything, especially old bridesmaids dresses, so I had to scour the Salvation Army. I found a great "ugly" dress and sure enough - I won the WORST DRESS award!

WHY

I'm Excited. Tomorrow I leave for Houston. I am driving all by myself. For some, that may sound boring....to me....it's the sound of sweet peace and quiet for 5+ hours. No sounds of Veggie Tales, or a little boy asking "Why?" and "What's That?"
As grateful as I am that he is intelligent and vocal, it can really get old after a while.
Let me put this in perspective: Pike says "WHY" so much that the other night, Steve was bathing him and he got so tired of hearing "WHY" that he had a little talk with Pike about how he shouldn't say it so much...... that daddy gets tired of answering questions...... and also said "You can only ask "WHY" to mommy!" What a cop-out!
So, I am excited about a drive to Houston. How lame is that? Not really, because I get to go to Harwin - which is so fun! I get to eat yummy food - fun too! I also get to spend the night at a fun hotel downtown - fun too!
Then on Sunday, I come home. WHY?

Because I'll miss the WHY

Potty Training

A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK!!!

Pike is potty training and it's actually going really well - we are finishing up day 3. I think we are on the road to success!

I took this picture the other morning before I took him to preschool. He was about to get on the potty and he saw his daddy's magazine and said "I gotta get my magazine." He proceeded to get off the potty and grab it, get back on and that's when I called daddy to come see and I ran for the camera.

I think it is hilarious! Exactly like his daddy!
PS: Nevermind my PINK bathroom - isn't it hideous? It's next on my list of remodeling!
